Intro: Hungarian police have detained two hungarians who are
suspected of having smuggled two kilograms of radioactive
material from Russia. As Stefan Bos reports from Budapest, the
announcement was made Tuesday at a press conference in Budapest.
Text: Police said the two kilograms of radiating material were
supposedly uranium fuel rods.
Colonel Laszlo Tonhauzer -- head of the police department for
organized crime -- said the material was found Monday in a car
parked in front of a Budapest hotel.
Mr. Tonhauzer said the material was smuggled from Russia by two
hungarians -- whom he only identified as being 41 and 42 years
old.
The hungarian press agency, M-T-I, reported the two people wished
to sell the material for 40-thousand dollars per kilo.
Hungarian police officials said the material could be used to
produce nuclear arms.
Its believed the hungarians were hoping to sell the material to
other countries. None were named. (Signed)
