I have a friend who would like to volunteer for an environmental
organization in Hungary. She needs to calculate what her living expenses
would be, but is not sure where to begin. I would appreciate it if any
readers of this group might comment on the cost of living in Hungary, both
in the countryside and in Budapest. In terms of expenses, I think that
she would prefer her own flat, but it need not be in the city, then basic
food, and travel costs within Hungary and Central Europe. (How much would
she need to earn in Forints to cover basic expenses? In US dollars?)

Thank you for your assistance. Please direct your replies to me at

While I disagree with Gottha1rd Sa1ghi-Szabo1, there are many voting
procedures where both sides have a way of presenting their reasoning:
in the California initiatives there is usually a pro, a con, a rebuttal
of the con, and a rebuttal of the pro presented in the voter's handbook.
The Usenet procedure, however, is not symmetrical, primarily because there
is rarely a coherent opposition of the kind automatically provided by both
Democrats and Republicans to initiatives of the other party. Rather, there
is a near-anarchy (hey, it wouldn't be Usenet otherwise) and lots of flaming.

So Gottha1rd is frustrated like hell that his arguments don't get the same
hearing as those of the proponent. Well, they don't, and for Gottha1rd to
change this situation is next to impossible. (Especially as Zoli plays by
Usenet rules while Gottha1rd seems to be less than perfectly familiar with
the setup.) So flame on, but please try to make s.c.m the primary locus of
the debate -- those reading HUNGARY (many without Usenet access) might not
be so interested, and anyway no new arguments pro or con are being made.

I'd like to add one small but important correction to Andras'es
otherwise good description of the situation: Gotthard does get the same
hearing as I, and everyone else, do. He can, indeed have, promote his
point of view on the very same fora the CFV is posted. This is very
different from a state-sponsored voters' handbook or official ballot,
with which no counter-campaign - competing on the same level field -
could be launched by the opponents.
