Intro:  After  no  single party managed to win a majority in
parliamentary elections this weekend, talks on a coalition
government in Slovakia will be long and difficult.  Alena
Kenclova in Prague analyzes some of the options.

Text:  The "Movement for a Democratic Slovakia" of Vladimir
Meciar scored a decisive victory in the early elections, winning
35 percent of the vote.  Mr. Meciar -- a left-leaning populist
and nationalist -- is seeking a comeback after having been ousted
twice as prime minister because of his abrasive political style.

But  no  leader --  not  even Mr. Meciar -- has emerged as a
clear candidate to head the next Slovak government.  A colorful
patchwork of seven parties makes up the new 150-member
legislature and the complex relations on the Slovak political
scene may produce surprise solutions.  Some analysts do  not
even rule out new elections.

The poll proved disastrous for a grouping led by reform
communists, now called the "Party of the Democratic Left.". Their
10 percent of the vote -- far short of their pre-election hopes
-- does  not  give them the leverage they expected in coalition
bargaining.

In contrast, two small extreme parties could find themselves
being courted as partners for a government.  The nationalist
"Slovak National Party" had been allied with Mr. Meciar's
movement in his previous cabinet.  But the leader of the
newly-formed far-left "Workers Association of Slovakia," Jan
Luptak,  says he refuses to be tied by what he calls the "yoke of
a coalition."

Jozef Moravcik -- the prime minister of the outgoing government
-- still hopes the left-right coalition which has ruled Slovakia
for the last six months has a chance to continue.  But with only
eight percent of the vote, his "Democratic Union" party can  not
hope to influence the talks in a substantial way.

Some members of the grouping formed to represent the interests of
half a million ethnic Hungarians say the coalition is ready to
enter the government.  But other parties rule out any cooperation
if the Hungarian grouping does  not  dissociate itself from
demands for Hungarian autonomy in Southern Slovakia.

Talks on a coalition have yet to begin and are expected to take a
long time.  But the results show that, as in previous elections,
the Slovak population is less inclined to accept radical reforms
than voters in the Czech Republic -- from which Slovakia
separated one-and-one-half years ago.

Political analysts have warned that Slovakia may face instability
unless the elections produce a government committed to reform.
