7 ABOUT BALAZS POCS (mind)  12 sor     (cikkei)

+ - HL Status Report (mind) VÁLASZ  Feladó: (cikkei)

Dear Colleagues,

1) I would like to express our thanks to Gotthard Saghi-Szabo, Arpad Fabian
Kovacs and Zsolt Nagy for setting up the HL list. Let us hope that it will
become an effective tool to serve justice, tolerance and enlightenment in the
coming years. Thanks to Gotthard, Arpad and Zsolt for making that possible.

2) I would like to ask all of you to help in increasing the HL subscriber
list, by making our existence known not only to your friend, but also through
the newspapers, radio and TV programs. To sign up, all you have to do is to
send an e-mail to: , leave the subject and copy areas
empty and write in the text: subscribe hl (write in your e-mail address)

3) I am glad to report that the HL members in Asia have also been active: The
United Daily News of Taivan has published a major report on the language
police in Slovakia. The title was: "Exiled From Their Language."

4) I would also like to quote a few sentences from the letter of Congressman
Dan Schafer, addressed to Eugene Megyesy:
"Thank you for contacting me regarding the new law in Slovakia limiting the
use of minority languages in that country...I share your concerns over ethnic
intolerance, especially in a part of the world so near to the Balkans, which
has seen...Please be assured that if Congress deals with any legistlation on
this matter, I will be sure to keep your comments in mind..."
Congressman Schafer makes two important points, which we could use in
our letters to all Senators and Congressman: 1) We don't want the ethnic
intolerance of the Balkans to spread and therefore it is in the interest of
the United States to stop such steps as the establiishment of the language
police. 2) There is a willingness in Congress to pass legistlation to protect
the rights of national communities, and we should ask our representatives to
introduce such legistlation.

5) I am leaving shortly to visit The Hague in connection with the Danube
issue. It would be helpful, if prior to my arrival, the court received some
fax-es indicating that the existence of the Compromise Palan for returning
the Danube into its natural river-bed is known around the world and is
supported by many. If you would like to help in my receiving a hearing and
having an opportunity to describe the plan, you can send a fax to Arthur Th.
Witteveen, Secretary of the Court in charge of information matters,
International Court of Justice: 011-31-070-364-9928

6) As many on our list are not of Hungarian origin and also because many do
not reside in North America, the interest of the HL list is broader than the
goal of Hungarian-Americans trying to influence their political leaders. Our
interest is to have a world-wide impact on both the political leadership and
the media and our interest is in assisting in the evolution of a better life
for all in Central Europe, not just Hungarians.

Happy New Year, Bela Liptak

Well, first I was only going to comment that "There isn't one." but that
seemed flippant.
However, the "collectivization" of the mind also can be achieved like the
"salami" process of one of our ex great leaders, eventually leading to
lobotomy, at which point the exploitation of man by man will be reversed.

Regards and a Happy New Year to All! (those who celebrate the New Year at
other times, please do not delete but save this greeeting for the
appropriate date) I will NOT wish Joe Szalai a "good day" one at the time,
he has to take it a year at the time!

I wonder what the reason was for a lengthy reproduction from Nemzet to the
english language Hungary. Was it self healing fro mr.Szucs since his name
appears often enuogh.
Who cares.

No wonder they can't find their way to "Europe" if they keep changing the
road names.

In article <v01510100ad0a6e704ecc@[204.156.156.118]>, Andras Szucs

>Well, I was rather sure that all "debate" will cease about the

>at the very moment when someone digs up some actual data

All the theoretical *scientific* debate about peoples' psychologies,
attitudes, expectations and fears are way over my head, I'm afraid,
but may I be allowed to contribute a miniscule drop into the ocean of
knowledge and understanding?

I don't know what the so-called *real facts* are supposed to mean in this
debate, but having travelled fairly extensively and lived on the European
Continent, it seems to me that gypsies are treated a lot better in Hungary
than just about anywhere else I know, especially in contrast to Britain,
Rumania and Bulgaria (the latter two in communist times.) My experience of
gypsies in Eire (Irish Republic) is more limited, but I understand that
they generally get a better deal there than most other places.

During past travels and adventures I had occasion to meet a few gypsies
and, particularly in Greece, worked on the land with them (many gypsies
in Greece travel around seeking seasonal work to harvest and distribute
farm and fruit produce.) I stayed in a headman's family tent one night
after we got drunk together (after all, at that time I was a sort of
*traveller* too); conversation depended on my primitive grasp of Greek.
Of course, the *free* gypsy life style frightens *square* and narrow-
minded people, especially in towns, just like *hippies* did (and still
do); go to some folk/jazz/rock concerts, see films like *Easy Rider* and
live in Amsterdam for a while if you still don't know what I'm talking
about.

Is there any other nation-state, apart from Hungary, that ever had a
policy for protecting gypsy culture or attempted to integrate gypsies
into mainstream society? (I realize that it is also something of an
anomaly to talk about integrating a free-wheeling life-style and culture
into a rigid and static society, but that is another issue....)

Make love, not war!
