Mysterious Ukraine Fish Deaths

  Scientists are trying to determine why hundreds of tonnes of
  fish have died in the past week in lakes in southern Ukraine
  near the Romanian border. A spokesman for Ukraine's Civil
  Defence authority said up to 600 tonnes of dead fish had been
  found in and near Lake Yalpug, one of the former Soviet
  republic's largest lakes and the chief source of drinking
  water for the region.

  "Soldiers have been trying since yesterday to collect the fish
  that have been accumulating," Pyotr Lasi, a local authority
  official, said by telephone from the town of Bolgrad. "Police
  are guarding the site to ensure that no one tries to sell the
  fish. That could trigger an epidemic."

  Water supplies were cut off to homes in the region, but tests
  produced nothing unusual, he said.

  Unexplained accumulations of dead fish also occurred last year
  in the lake, whose waters flow into Lake Kugurlui and from
  there into a branch of the Danube delta. Earlier this year,
  lack of oxygen killed large numbers of fish in the ice-covered
  Dnieper river which bisects Ukraine.

  "Operations to clean up that disaster are still going on,"
  Serhy Shumeiko, a fish inspector at the Environment Ministry,
  told Reuters. "Projects to make fertiliser from the fish have
  been abandoned. They are being buried in pits."

Ecological Risk Analysis Tools and Application

The Oak Ridge National Laboratories recently introduced a new site 
of information and tools for Ecological Risk Analysis.  The site 
also includes Ecotoxicological benchmarks and will soon have 
completed risk assessments as examples of the available 
applications.  An Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view the full 
text benchmarks and asessments but it is available for download at 
the site.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service recently introduced six new sites
covering various parts of their operation.  The sites are currently
featured on the FWS home page and include: Law Enforcement, Region
5 (Northeast), Migratory Bird Management Office, N.A. Waterfowl and
Wetlands Office, Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge and the D.C.
Booth National Historic Fish Hatchery.
