Database Administrator

The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Easterrn Europe (REC) is
now accepting applications for the position of Database Administrator. The
REC is an independent, international organization. The REC's mission is to
promote cooperation among diverse environmental groups and interests in
Central and Eastern Europe. The REC is active in 13 countries from the
Baltic States to Albania. Under it's information exchange program REC is
establishing an electronic network between it's Local Offices and
environmental stakeholders throughout the region in cooperation with other
institutions and projects. 

The database Administrator will be responsible for the implementation and
updating of REC in-house computer databases. This person is also expected
to assist the Information Systems Officer in managing the REC's electronic
communications network and in further developing the REC's presence on the
Internet.

The position is based in our Budapest office. The ideal candidate will be
from the CEE region and have many of the following qualifications:

 . Working knowledge of spoken/written English and spoken/written Hungarian
  (preferable) 
 . At least 2 years strong experience with flat and relational
  database software including client/server distributed technologies 
 . FileMaker Pro experience 
 . Experience with information systems, TCP/IP Internet applications, and 
  server technologies (FTP, Gopher, WWW) 
 . Strong system experience with Windows 3.x, Windows 95, and Novell NetWare 
 . Experience with database scripting, word processing, and hardware options 
 . Self-dependence in work, ability for multi-national team working 
 . Organizational skills and initiative including activities on international
  and regional scale 
 . Ability to consult and train users of computer databases and Internet applica
tions

                      PROGRAM ASSOCIATE FOR ENVIRONMENT
                         FOREST AND MARINE PROTECTION

The Pew Charitable Trusts has one of the largest
environmental philanthropic programs in the U.S.
The program's staff includes a director, three officers, two
associates, three secretaries and varied consultants whose
number changes in accordance with program needs.  The
associate for Forest and Marine Protection reports
directly to the two officers responsible for the Environment
Program's efforts to halt the destruction of forests and
marine ecosystems in North America.  The other issues of
concern to the Environment Program are global
warming and climate change and pollution prevention. In
1995, the program invested $23 million in these four
areas.

The Pew Charitable Trusts consists of seven individual
charitable trusts, established by the sons and
daughters of Joseph N. Pew, with total assets of
approximately $3.8 billion and a $180 million grants budget.
The Trusts make grants in six program areas--Health and
Human Services, Culture, Education, Environment, Public
Policy and Religion--and an Interdisciplinary Fund.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The associate has both programmatic and administrative
responsibilities.  Work with the two officers to research
issues, develop and refine program strategy and design
projects.  Act as the point person for the administrative
aspects of the forest and marine work, such as preparing
analytical reports and board documents, meeting with
potential grantees, tracking major deadlines, drafting
special letters and memos, monitoring the work
of consultants and responding to requests for information.
Some local and national travel is required.

APPLICANT QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred candidates will have professional experience in
environmental protection or environmental
public interest organizations and an advanced degree in a
related field.

Specific qualifications for this program associate are:
?    Three years professional experience with environmental
protection issues and broad exposure to
the activities of environmental public interest organizations.
?    Advanced degree in the sciences, law, public policy,
design, economics, business management or
other fields that relate to environmental policy making is
preferred.
?    Broad general knowledge of forest and marine
conservation issues.
?    Demonstrated skills in advocacy and policy analysis.
?    Excellent written and oral communication skills, including
an ease in summarizing the essence of
issues.
?    Strong organizational skills and an aptitude for
administrative work.
?    An ability to make decisions, justify recommendations
and be responsive and clear with colleagues, grantees and
applicants.
?    Integrity, flexibility, resilience, good humor, vision, and a
high level of energy.  A tolerance for paperwork and a
respect for administrative procedures.

SALARY RANGE is $30,000 to $38,000, depending on
qualifications.  Excellent benefits package.

Supervole thrives on Chernobyl radioactivity

Scientists studying wildlife in contaminated wastes around the
Chernobyl nuclear power station have made a sinister discovery --
voles that thrive on radioactive pollution. "These are the most
contaminated animals I've seen anywhere. They're living on radioactive
materials," said Ron Chesser of the University of Georgia in the New
Scientist journal today. Radioactivity and other pollutants usually
trigger mutations in animal genes, which weaken the species by killing
its members off before they can reproduce. But a species of vole is
breeding healthily and producing ever-stronger offspring beside the
Ukraine's Chernobyl plant, which exploded in 1986, spewing out
radioactive poison. Chesser and other scientists examined the
supervole's genetic make-up and found it was mutating at an incredible
rate. Since genetic diversity is what ensures the survival of a
species, the supervoles were actually becoming more resilient. Voles
of the same species living 19 miles away, outside the contaminated
area, had normal rates of mutation.
