  A csehben van egy jellegzetes hangváltozás, a lágy mássalhangzók előtti /a/ 
> /e/, /u/ > /i/, /aj/ > /ej/ (ez az ún. pr^ehláska, avagy cseh umlaut). 
Ugyanakkor végbement diftongizáció is, így az /ú/ > /ou/ (valamint a csak 
beszélt nyelvben elfogadott /y'/ > /ej/). Így a szlovák "sudca" 'bíró' szónak 
a cseh "soudce" felel meg.

  Ugyanakkor a csehben megmaradt a hímnemű (eredetileg "-o/jo"-tövű) 
névszavak jellegzetes többes szám eszközhatározós (röv. Ipl.) ragja, az "-y" 
(ill. lágy paradigmában "-i"), míg a szlovák lecserélte ezt az "-i"-tövű 
főnevek "-mi" (mgh.-torlódás után "-ami") ragjával, így a fenti szó Ipl.-e: 
cs. "soudci", szlk. "sudcami" 'bírókkal'.

  Ebből a két adatból összerakható az ócseh "*súdci" alak. (A cs. hosszú /ou/ 
< "/*ú/ és a szlk. rövid /u/ különbsége még egy dolgot megmutat: a közös 
elődnyelvben még megvolt a szláv zenei hangsúly. Az eredetileg hosszú 
emelkedő intonációjú mgh.-k időtartama a csehben megmaradt, a szlovákban 
megrövidült. Ez utóbbi az egyik jegy, ami szlovákot a szerb-horváttal 
összeköti, és egyben mutatja, hogy a nyelvi elkülönülésnek vannak IX. sz. 
előtti elemei [vi. az ócseh nyelv nyelvjárásilag tagolt volt].)

  Mint minden rendes indoeurópai nyelvben, a szláv nyelvekben is kétféle ige 
volt, tematikus ill. atematikus: a tematikus igéknél a ragok egy tőképző 
magánhangzó (azaz "téma") közbeiktatásával kapcsolódtak a tőhöz (bár a rag és 
a tőképző utóbb gyakran egybeolvadt), míg az atematikusaknál nem volt ilyen.

  A két igetípussal eltérő ragok voltak használatosak, így kijelentő mód 
egyes szám első személyben az ősszláv nyelvben az atematikus igéknél 
"*-m1", a tematikusoknál "*-o," ["1" - lágy jer = rekukált "i" = /i_X/, "o," -
 farkas "o" = nazális "o" = /o~/], melyekből később "-m" ill. "-u" (ill. 
lengyel: "-e,") lett. Vö. latin párhuzam: "sum" 'vagyok' ~ "eó" 'megyek'.

  Az ószláv és az azt követő korszakban általános tendencia volt, hogy az 
"-m" rag a tematikus igéken is megjelent (kiv. a keleti szlávot), de ez csak 
a szlovákban és a nyugati délszlávban [még egy párhuzam!] ment végbe 
teljesen. Ugyanakkor a fenti cseh umlaut miatt lágy hangok után az "-u" rag
"-i" lett, így a cs. "lituji" 'sajnálok' szóval a szlk. "l'utujem" áll 
szemben, melyből előáll egy ócseh "*l'utuju".
